Each year, the Office of Service-Learning assesses the impact of community-engaged teaching and learning on students, faculty, and community partners. Reports of impact data and assessments are below.

Community Engagement Dashboard

VCU’s strategic plan emphasizes university-wide integrated planning, data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement assessment. Developed in collaboration with the Office of Planning and Decision Support, this interactive dashboard represents some of the ways in which VCU engages with our communities.

Student Success Measures

Student Success and Service-Learning

The Office of Service-Learning utilizes institutional data to assess the impact of service-learning class participation on undergraduate retention and graduation rates as well as on students’ perception of the quality of their educational experience at VCU. The Student Success Report provides a summary of these institutional data.

Service-Learning Impact Measure

At the end of each semester, the Office of Service-Learning distributes the online Service-Learning Impact Measure (SLIM) to every student enrolled in a service-learning class. The SLIM evaluates the students’ own perceptions of the impact that service-learning class participation has had on their own learning and development. The SLIM Report, published annually, describes the results, highlighting strengths and detailing growth opportunities for service-learning at VCU.

Service-Learning Faculty Assessment

In order to guide its continuous improvement efforts, the Office of Service-Learning regularly gathers feedback from faculty members who teach service-learning classes.
